Getting the Vegetable Patch Ready for Spring

Linda Blair April 19, 2018 Reviews Leave a Comment

With Spring well and truly on the way now, many keen gardeners will start to think about getting the garden ready to look its best in the Summer. You might be considering adding some garden ornaments such as Corten metal garden sculptures from http://www.afsculpture.uk/portfolio_page/corten-metal-sculptures/  and making your garden a place to enjoy. This also applies if you are going to be growing your own vegetables. The preparation that you put in now can provide you with a good harvest of tasty vegetables. Here are a few of the things that you need to think of…

Getting raised beds ready – Raised beds are perfect for making your vegetable growing easier. They are especially good if your soil doesn’t have a great deal of nutrients or is not ideally suited to grow vegetables. They are easy to build yourself too if you don’t already have any. Old items of furniture, or wooden pallets are perfect for building raised beds. If you do have some in your garden already, give them a good inspection before you plant anything, and replace any rotten pieces if necessary, or any parts that have come loose.

Get all of your Equipment Ready – Make sure that you have everything that you need. Ice lolly sticks and cut up yoghurt pots are useful for labelling plants that are in pots if you don’t have any plant labels. When it comes to pots, make sure that you have enough for what you want to plant in them and make sure that they are clean before you put anything in them, as diseases can be passed between plants from uncleansed pots. This is also the time to make sure that you have all the seeds that you need – if you have them left over from last year, go through them. Throw away any that are out of date and make a note to replace them. Carrots should be thrown away regardless and they will not be any good two years in a row.

Start to Sow – Make sure that you have your compost ready to use, and as you will start off sowing the seeds in pots near the windows in your home at first, as well as in the greenhouse (if you have one) it is a good idea to put the compost into  a lidded container rather than in the plastic bag it comes in. This makes it much easier when preparing your pots. You can also use cardboard toilet rolls cut in half to sow seeds in to begin with. When it comes to moving to the vegetable patch in the garden they will be easy to transport.
