How To Choose The Right Swimming Program For Your Child

Linda Blair September 26, 2018 Reviews Leave a Comment

Parents seeking out swimming lessons for their children have many options before them. But with all the choices available, it can be a challenge to decide which is best. Certain factors come into play with respect to the age of the child, their level of experience in and around water, and the type of learning environment in which the child excels.

Taking these aspects into consideration can be helpful for making that all-important decision towards enrolling your child in the right swimming program. This should be a rewarding and enriching experience, one that will give your child the building blocks for an appreciation and respect of water for the rest of their life.

The following are the most common types of programs that exist for teaching children of all ages how to swim and, more important, enjoy the activity to its fullest. These courses are available in the summer while some regions offer Fall swim school options as well to prepare children for the warmer months ahead.

Mommy and Me

For parents who want to introduce their newborns to the water, these are the courses to take. This type of program is helpful for infants and toddlers as well as children with special needs as a way to teach them the basics of their aquatic environment. Lessons such as these can also work towards eliminating any fears of going in or near the water.

Instructors of these courses are trained to work with the youngest of children to help ease them into the water and work towards reducing their anxiety and reluctance.

Group Courses

These swimming programs can be a lot of fun as children can take courses with their friends or make new ones while honing their skills in the water. A group setting is usually the next step for many children who are already comfortable being in the water and there are group courses for all ages and levels of experience.

There are Mommy and Me group courses as well as more advanced options for children of all ages. Depending on the course, kids are taught basic and intermediate levels of swim skills including floating, kicking, a variety of stroke styles and even diving.

Private Instruction

These types of lessons are ideal for two situations, for kids who are not comfortable in group settings or have such a fear of the water that they need one-on-one attention and kids who are highly advanced and want to improve their skills to compete. In the case of the latter, a private instructor can help your child to swim faster, develop their form, hone their abilities, and improve their breathing skills to prepare for them for the competitive circuit.

Private lessons can also be a smart precursor to your child joining an organized swim team at their school or local organization. These courses are the perfect complement to instruction as part of a competitive team sport and the two work in concert together for preparing the child to pursue swimming as a professional endeavor later on.
