The word ‘powerboating’ wasn’t even heard of a few years ago, but as the sailing world expands and becomes increasingly popular, powerboating is one of the most popular areas of water-based sports. But before you sign up for your RYA powerboat level 2 qualification, let’s take a closer look at what it’s all about:
The changing world of boats
Only a few short years ago, the boating world was typically split into motorboats, sailing dinghies, punts and yachts. But today there are RIBs, PWCs, motor boats, power boats, motor yachts, motor cruisers, skiffs, sailing dinghies, superyachts, yachts and even mega yachts! The world of boating is ever-evolving!
So what is a powerboat exactly?
A power boat is basically anything that is engine-powered, and it’s a boat that people don’t sleep on, meaning that
powerboats are usually used for short hops – unlike a motor cruiser which is engine-powered, but is also designed to provide accommodation.
Where have powerboats come from
Powerboats started to emerge in the 1960s, when the boating world started to change as technology evolved and as consumers found themselves with a higher disposable income and a desire to make the most of their leisure time. Suddenly, people wanted to use small and easy boats, with bigger craft and outboard motors becoming popular. This led to skimming boats that could plane across the water, using less power to move faster. Powerboats were born!

People were able to get familiar with powerboats quickly and it was – and still is – a relatively quick way to become comfortable on the water. Today, you can do the RYA powerboat level 2 qualification through providers such as Solent Boat Training, to ensure you’re ready to get on the water.
