Laminate flooring is a great solution for busy households, and modern laminate floors are incredibly versatile, with different finishes to suit every need. It looks like solid wood and it’s remarkably eco-friendly too. Let’s take a look.

The appeal of laminate

Common sizes such as 12mm laminate flooring are made from layers with a solid wood top to create a beautiful surface that is also durable and strong. The four layers combine to add strength, reduce the cost against traditional full wood, and also better withstand the challenges of daily use. Laminate flooring is also eco-friendly as it uses wood chips and waste products from the wood manufacturing industry, combined with sustainable production practices for a lower carbon solution.

The laminate layers

As a flooring firm such as //www.irwintiles.ie/wooden-flooring/laminate-flooring/laminate-12mm-water-resistant will tell you, there are four different layers in 12mm laminate flooring as follows: the wear layer, to protect the visual appearance and act as a clear topcoat, the design layer – which is made using a HD printer for a beautiful design, an inner core for wood stability and a backing layer, which provides moisture resistance.

There is also the option of an underlayment area, which can be added to the backing layer as a separate extra.

How is laminate made

Although every plank of laminate has the same foundational layers, it can either be made using Direct Pressure Laminate or High-Pressure Laminate approaches. These are designed to produce flooring with different degrees of space. DPL laminate is affordable and durable. HPL tends to be used for commercial applications.
