Are aluminium or steel balustrades more sustainable?

Sustainability is a really important factor to think about when you’re choosing building materials. Obviously, things like appearance, maintenance and cost are still going to influence your decisions, but loads of homeowners and developers now want products with a lower environmental impact. So, with that in mind, what’s more sustainable – aluminium or steel balustrades? Let’s take a closer look.

Durability over the long term

A product that lasts for decades usually has a smaller environmental footprint than one needing frequent replacement, and steel is generally stronger than aluminium on that front, and can also cope with heavier loads.

Well-designed metal balustrades like these examples //donkeywellforge.co.uk/what-we-make/metal-handrails-balustrades stay in great condition for a long time with appropriate maintenance, and that reduces the need for replacement materials and additional manufacturing.

Recycling and production

Both steel and aluminium are recyclable, but steel is often easier to recycle repeatedly without losing its quality. Modern steel production also relies heavily on recycled content, helping reduce the demand for newly extracted raw materials.

Aluminium has the advantage of being lightweight, which can reduce transport emissions, although producing primary aluminium is generally more energy intensive than producing recycled steel.

Choosing the right material

The most sustainable option often depends on the project itself, so choosing a high-quality product that suits its surroundings is usually more important than focusing on one material alone.

Sustainability is about the whole life of a product, and a balustrade that’s durable, repairable and recyclable is going to deliver environmental benefits long after installation, regardless of whether that’s aluminium or steel.
