Ways to start crocheting

Linda Blair February 05, 2023 Fashion Leave a Comment

Crochet is a craft form that has been around for hundreds of years and it has been used for creating items such as blankets, soft furnishings for homes and for making or embellishing items of clothing. In the 1970s there was a huge rise in the number of people that wore clothing that had crocheted fringes or were made out of crocheting complete. Homes were also adorned with crocheted placemats and decorative doilies that were placed in the middle of tables. Plant pot holders were also created from crochet.

If you want to learn to crochet there are a number of ways that you can do this.

Kits – if you want to start with a particular project or you want to be able to buy all the materials and equipment that you need to make a certain item, along with step by step instructions you  might want to look at a kit. These kits are a great way to start and you can find them for making scarves, hats and you can get Crochet Blanket Kits from places like  www.woolcouturecompany.com/collections/blanket-and-cushions-crochet-kits. By following the instructions you can work at your own pace and at the end you will have a wonderful item that you will be able to use for yourself or gift to a friend or loved one.

Classes – if you are someone who needs to have the support of others when you learn something new, you could look for some crochet classes. There are often classes that take place in local community centres and village halls. In some cases you may also be able to find knitting and crocheting groups that meet on a regular basis. These groups can be a good option if you are looking for a much less formal way to learn.

YouTube – if you need a visual way to learn and you want to be able to go back over the instructions time and time again you might want to look on YouTube. There are thousands of videos dedicated to crocheting and you will be able to follow along whilst the instructor creates an item with you. Be sure to check whether you are watching someone who uses US or UK crochet terms so you don’t get confused later on.
