Note: The fault of an Electric Steering Rack is not the same as for a Hydraulic Steering System (there are no fluid leaks etc.). We therefore describe the failure in terms of changes in steering feel, warning lights etc. as well as unusual sounds etc.
Loss of Power Assistance
The Power Steering Warning Light comes on and the steering effort becomes very heavy, especially when starting off from cold and low speed motoring. A faulty electric motor or blown fuse in the power assistance circuit is normally the cause of this problem.
Torque Sensor Failure
A failing torque sensor results in inconsistent assistance. This can sometimes cause the car to pull to one side. The assistance can become light or heavy at times and it can be hard to predict.
ECU Communication Errors
These faults often come as a result of the communication between the Rack and Vehicle’s ECU. Typically, faults in this area can be caused by wiring harness damage or a corroded connector. Stored fault codes can be retrieved with the aid of a diagnostic scan.
Internal Rack Wear
There are known cases of internal rack wear in high mileage vehicles, typically causing a knocking or clunking sound on bumps. The corresponding high degree of play in the steering wheel can also be a clear indicator for such wear.
