Why does the washing machine smells like sewage?

Therefore, today we will see together the causes that bring the smell of sewage in the washing machine.

Limestone

The first cause is to be found in the formation of limestone, which, as we know, is the enemy of our home, as it tends to settle everywhere and cause considerable damage.

In fact, in addition to forming a patina on the surfaces, the limestone also tends to settle in the pipes and the washing machine, compromising its functionality.

Usually, in the washing machine, it tends to accumulate in the drum and settle inside the pipes, thus producing that unpleasant smell of sewage.

Soap residues

The pipes, however, could be clogged not only due to the formation of limescale but also due to deposits and residues of detergent and softener.

These, in fact, in the long run, tend not only to obstruct the passage in the drain pipes but also to originate the classic ” stench of sewage ” that we feel when we start the washing machine.

Problem with the aqueduct

If your washing machine gives off a sewage odor that you can also smell in the kitchen and bathroom drains, there is probably a problem with the water supply.

In this case, you just have to contact whoever is competent and avoid trying home remedies to solve the plumbing problem.

How to get rid of the washing machine smells like sewage?

Once we have seen the causes of the washing machine smells like sewage, let’s see together what to do to prevent it.

First of all, we advise you to clean and dry the gasket after each washing cycle to remove soap residues and stagnant water.

In addition to the seal, it is also important to clean the drum at least once a month to avoid mold growth from the detergent residues.

In this regard, we remind you not to use too much detergent and to always prefer natural and non-chemical products.

Finally, clean the filter at least once a year.

How to get rid of the stench?

It’s time to see the natural remedies to get rid of the smell of sewage from your washing machine!

Before trying the suggested remedies, however, it is always important to understand the cause of the bad smell to be sure to proceed without making a mistake.

Basket cleaning

Simply prepare a solution based on water and vinegar and spray it inside the surface to clean the drum.

Vinegar is a natural anti-limescale and eliminates odor. In this way, you can carry out a gentle cleaning with the help of microfibre cloth. Alternatively, you can also proceed with a vacuum wash in the washing machine with citric acid.

All you have to do is dissolve 150 grams of citric acid in 1 liter of warm water, preferably demineralized.

Then pour the entire mixture into the basket and start the washing cycle at high temperatures. Your washing machine will be cleaner than ever!

Gasket

The gasket often has dirt and bad smells due to the accumulation of detergent or water stagnation as it retains moisture. In addition, it can also be prone to mold or deterioration.

To clean it, you can create a cleaning paste with lemon, baking soda and vinegar.

Mix a little by eye, just enough to form a paste. With the help of a damp toothbrush, distribute the mixture all over the inside of the seal.

Rinse and dry. The antibacterial properties of vinegar are combined with the cleaning and anti-odor action of baking soda. Lemon juice, on the other hand, has a degreasing function, as well as being very fragrant.

Cleaning drains

To remove dirt and detergent residues from the drains, you can try vacuum washes.

In general, it is advisable to proceed with this operation once every 2 months to always have a washing machine as good as new.

It is also advisable to choose very high temperatures to have a complete sanitizing effect on all components.

One of the best ways to do a vacuum wash in a washing machine is citric acid.

It is a compound deriving from citrus fruits that performs various functions: it is a powerful descaler and eliminates all odors.

Thanks to its eco-friendly approach, we can use it to do an effective vacuum wash in the washing machine without polluting the environment.

Just dissolve 150 grams of citric acid in 1 liter of warm water, preferably demineralized. The entire mixture should be poured into the washing machine compartment.

Then, start washing at high temperatures, preferably at 90 degrees.

Warnings

We recommend that you evaluate the condition of your washing machine with a professional to better understand the causes of the bad smell.

The products listed are completely natural, but it’s best to make sure you use them in your washing machine. The models are different and the materials can change.

As for the cleaning of the pipes, it is better to ask who is responsible for the specific products and how they are used.
