Choosing the Right Colours for your Home

Colour is important to us in many ways – it helps us to express ourselves to others and also affects how we feel. We associate so much with colour, and it is part of our language – for example ‘seeing red’ means that someone is angry, or the ‘green eyed monster’ means that someone is jealous. Colours have an effect on our brains, and therefore should be something that we consider carefully when decorating our homes. As much as we like to look through the interior design magazines and look at the latest colours that are fashionable in home decorating, you should also take into account how colours can affect you and what you want each room to feel like to you.

The colour of the room that you choose can have an effect on your energy levels and mood, and it is also a good way to express your personality. It is also worth considering the size of the room, how it will be used and the overall shape, as this will all help you pick a colour or colours that are right for you. The best-looking rooms are not necessarily the most modern and chic looks from a home decorating magazine, but rather ones that reflect the personality of the person or people who live in the home. However, it is worth making sure that the painting or wallpapering is done to a high standard regardless of what colour you choose – if you are not confident with decorating, get a professional like these Painters Cheltenham based https://jsdecorating.co.uk/ in to do it for you.

When it comes to thinking about the colour choices, using home inspiration magazines as a guide or a starting point can be useful, but don’t let them dictate to you. Consider what each colour means to you and how it makes you feel – for example, red is known to raise energy levels, and passion, but it is also associated with anger and higher blood pressure. Blue on the other hand is a calming colour, it can help to soothe and even lower the heart rate, so may be a great choice for a bedroom in particular.

Consider the colours that make up other colours too – for example, orange is a combination of yellow and red – so it combines the sunny cheerfulness of yellow with the high energy of red. Not a great choice for a bedroom perhaps, but for a playroom for example it is a great colour choice! Green is a calming colour but where it is blue combined with yellow it also has a cheerful feel to it and can help to lift the spirits – think how the woodlands have such a calming effect on us, it is partly due to how our brains see the colour green.

Many people are nervous of strong and bold colours, but you don’t have to cover all your walls in bright colours – you can use colours as an accent in a room, and when used with neutral shades like grey, this can tone them down a little and make them easier to live with.
