Bath is one of the most beautiful and picturesque cities in the country. Its town centre boasts glorious Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian architecture and the Royal Crescent is a thing of wonder to behold. As one of the greenest cities in Great Britain it will come as no surprise to find that Prior cannot be reached by Car. It’s not a far walk from the town centre and there is also a regular bus service but you will need to get there pretty much under your own steam. What will you see when you get there? Well the first thing that you will notice is the stunning Palladian style house that radiates wealth from the hill above. This is not owned by the Trust but is in fact a College that was gifted by the family of the original owner Ralph Allen. He was a self-made man working his way up through the post office and reforming it. He became the Mayor of Bath and used the money and resource from a local stone quarry to build the house. It is the usual portico frontage and Doric columned affair as was popular at the time but it is the contents of the garden that really draw the eye.
Across a sculptured river and lake sits a perfectly preserved Palladin Bridge. It is one of only four left in the world and it is an absolute marvel. Allen built it from the perfect stone around bath and it complements the landscape garden designed by the master of the art Lancelot Capability Brown. If you do nothing else when there then walk the down to the Bridge and experience it.
A word should be said about the garden. Brown was an advocate of the landscape garden and Prior park was for once a blank canvas for him. Usually he had to rip out the formal garden but here he was able to use the sloping hills and create the artificial lake to give the impression of a free landscape that is still highly managed. It is a really hidden gem of a place and able to offer relaxation and contemplation in equal measure.
