A quick insight into the necessity and utility of bbq covers

Linda Blair November 10, 2021 Reviews Leave a Comment

Talking about grills and BBQs, everyone wants to know whether they are really necessary or not. There’s a lot of passion and hullabaloo around this topic, which creates arguments on both sides as well. There’s not one run-off-the-mill answer or approach to this question.

  • The necessity of BBQ covers depends on your residential location, your grill’s location, and the brand you’re using. It’s always prudent to invest in a high-quality, reliable BBQ cover to protect your device.
  • The general argument here is that BBQ covers shield the appliances from elements. Additionally, the covers thwart falling debris and prevent insects and birds from using it as a shelter.
  • If the appliance is operational throughout the year, the covers can definitely prevent snow from accumulating inside or on the grill. It ensures that you can have a comfortable and nice dinner in algid conditions.

However, if you live in a very humid and damp area, don’t cover your grill without proper ventilation as it can trap moisture, leading to corrosion.

The covering aspects

If you’ve a premium stainless-steel barbeque, it can surely stand up to the snow, cold, and damp of winter months. If your BBQ is of lower quality, like cast iron or sheet steel, you need to cover or store it for extending its functional span.

  • Your BBQ can stay outside in the harsh winter weather regardless of its material. However, some will perform better than the others.
  • The amount of maintenance you put into your cherished grill before the onset of winter and the quality of bbq covers you’re using will determine its survival period.
  • Ordinary grill covers have a huge chance of caging moisture inside the appliance. You’ll find that low-end BBQs typically comprise cast iron and sheet steel. Both are susceptible to rust in summer and winter.
  • If your grill integrates these materials, make sure to remove the cover and clean and wipe it down on a frequent basis. Regular usage is also important in this regard.
  • It’s always a good idea to install your grill in an enclosed location, like underneath an overhang or a porch/patio.

Some crucial points

It’s actually a conundrum while knowing when and how to use your BBQ cover. Some water-resistant grill covers can’t even handle rains. Primarily, covering the appliance isn’t mandatory. Sometimes, it’s actually wise to not cover.

Other times, you need a fusion of covering and not doing so. Basically, if you own a high-quality, steel grill, you don’t need to panic about leaving it out in the open.

  • In humid climates, which doesn’t necessarily mean tropical and hot, the weather can be foggy too. It can be a bad idea to cover your BBQ as it can cause trapping of humidity under the cover.
  • In coastal climates, where people live by the scenic sea, the erratic weather and salty air can be a tough nut to crack. You need to cover the grill, especially when there’s forecast of heavy downpour, or any other natural vagaries.

Moreover, it’s best to schedule a weekly cleaning of the appliance with a damp cloth before thoroughly drying it up.
