5 More Common Flooring Issues and Their Fixes

A gorgeous wooden floor is a big financial investment. It also takes a lot of time, effort and skill to install correctly. Once in place, it adds character and warmth to any home.

Once you have understood the causes of the problem, you can resource the appropriate tools and techniques to restore and protect your floor for years to come.

Here are five more common wood flooring issues that can detract from the beauty of a wooden floor.

1. Staining

According to the National Wood Flooring Association, it is recommended stains are removed by rubbing with #000 steel wool or with fine sandpaper. Then allow the floor to dry and reapply the finish.

2. Blemishes Caused by Sanding

When you have invested in engineered flooring from a supplier such as https://www.woodfloorwarehouse.ie/engineered-flooring.html, it deserves to be looked after with careful sanding. Worn sanding pads can cause scratches, and varnish simply magnifies them.

The scratches must be removed by sanding past the coat where they are sitting, but in most cases it is easier to simply sand off all the coatings and start again. You can prevent further scratching by using 3M abrasive pads in between each finish coat.

3. Debris Caught in Varnish

Floor varnish is extremely vulnerable to contamination as it is drying. Hair, dust and dirt that land on it will stick securely and will show up even more when the varnish is dry.

This can be largely prevented by thoroughly cleaning all the surfaces in the room before applying the varnish. Wipe down the walls and light fixtures and then vacuum. It can also be useful to strain the varnish prior to use. Any patches of debris can be removed with sanding and then a new coat of varnish can be applied.

4. Fractured Wooden Floors

Some factory-finished floors suffer from fractures. It is usually possible to fix the fracture with a repair kit consisting of wood filler, a coloured marker and a bottle of finish.

5. Irregular Floor Boards

Deformities in floor boards are often caused by poor sanding techniques, but heavy wear can also contribute. The less dense parts of the board is softer and gets more easily damaged by heavy traffic, furniture and pets.

The problem can be fixed by flattening with a good drum sander and refinishing.
