Dorm Room Cooking Hacks

Moving away to Ohio University or another school can be exciting. However, there’s a lot you’ll have to learn living on your own. You’re going to be on your own for the first time, which means you’re going to have to cook for yourself. If you didn’t cook much while in high school and living at home with mom and dad, it’s not too late to learn how.

Cooking in your dorm room is an option if you’re trying to save money. Eating out all of the time will kill anyone’s budget, and we all know how important budgeting is while in college. But whipping up a dish in your dorm room requires you to buy certain equipment. You have to be mindful of the dorm rules, which may be strict when it comes to cooking equipment. However, you’ll be amazed at how much you can do with a microwave, iron (yes, the one you use on your clothes), and a coffee pot.

Read on to learn a few dorm room cooking hacks you can start using today.

  1. Enjoy an Oriental-Style Feast Using the Microwave

Your microwave is the ideal way to cook up ramen noodles for you and your pals. You can add frozen shrimp, chicken, and other meat to make the dish more fulfilling. The good news is that it doesn’t take long to make, usually taking no longer than 5 minutes to go from noodle wrapper to your dinner plate.

  1. Cook Chicken and Rice in Your Coffee Pot

Your coffee pot comes in handy for late-night studying, but it can be used for more than boiling up a hot cup of coffee. It can also be used to cook yourself a quick chicken and rice meal. You can also steam up some veggies using it. If you have two coffee pots, you can cook everything at once, so you don’t have to microwave anything.

  1. Bake Some Chocolate Cake in the Microwave

What’s a good home-cooked meal without some dessert? You can whip up some warm chocolate cake in as little as three and a half minutes. Nutella cake has options available you can make in a mug using your microwave.

  1. Make Grilled Cheese Using Your Iron

If you have an iron you rarely use, you can put it to use to make some lunch. Grilled cheese sandwiches are quick and easy to make. Just add butter to the outside like you normally do, then fry it with your iron. Make sure to wrap the sandwich in foil beforehand, so you can reuse your iron for clothes without getting any melted cheese on it.

  1. Fry Some Eggs in Your Coffee Maker’s Burner

After you’ve made a nice cup of coffee, remove the pot and crack some eggs on top of the burger. You can quickly whip up some eggs to eat with your morning coffee. This is a great option for students who aren’t allowed to have a microwave in their dorm room.

Using these dorm room hacks will ensure you don’t go broke or hungry this semester, so give them a try!
