The UK government has revealed its plans for the construction industry and Jobcentres to work in partnership to offer people the skills needed to enjoy fulfilling careers through placements and work experience.
Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall has attended the first ever Construction Skills Mission Board, along with sector CEOs, and announced a commitment to get 100,000 more people working in the construction industry a year by the time Parliament ends. The move is part of the Labour government’s Plan for Change, which includes a commitment to building 1.5 million new homes. This is being facilitated by a £39 billion commitment to social and affordable housing over the decade.
Jobcentre Roles
An agreement was signed at Earl’s Court Skills Centre’s Green Plant Academy by the Department for Work and Pensions and the Construction Industry Training Board, or CITB. It will mean that Jobcentres will work with construction industry professionals to offer tailored placements and work experience. Ministers have highlighted the plans to shake up Jobcentres and spend a total of £625 million in investments to deal with construction sector skills shortages. This should help to create as many as 60,000 more paid positions for joiners, electricians and engineers before Parliament ends.
Angela Rayner sad that the government is ready to deliver on its manifesto promise of 1.5 million new homes being built by helping to provide the investment and skills needed.
