Tips for an Indian Wedding

Dress modestly

First-timers often wonder what to wear at an Indian wedding. There is no dress code for Indian weddings. However, it is important to dress modestly. This means no bare legs or shoulders. If you are a female guest, wearing a traditional lehenga or sari is a great way to respect the wedding rituals. However, it’s okay if you do not have one. Men can wear suits or a sherwani, a long coat-like garment.

Plan for a wedding that lasts a while

An Indian wedding can last for at least three days and sometimes even a whole week. There are many events, including the pre-wedding rituals such as Mehndi and the main ceremony lasting 2-3 hours. The reception is also part of the wedding. You may be invited to attend some of these events. Plan your schedule and rest enough to participate in the events that you are invited to. Get involved

Most Indian weddings demand a great deal of guest participation – from blessing the couple during key moments to dancing at the reception. While it is acceptable to socialise, drink chai and eat snacks during the 2-3 hour wedding ceremony, guests are encouraged to get involved.

The traditional wedding gift is money

Indian weddings have a tradition of giving gifts. Money is the traditional wedding gift. It is considered the best gift to begin a new life together. It is best to place money in an envelope or bag with your wishes and put it inside. No matter what currency you use, the amount of Indian wedding money should always be an “auspicious number” ending in 1. The amount you should give depends on your budget and proximity to the bride and groom.
