Three Things to Protect Against During the Winter

Linda Blair November 16, 2021 Reviews Leave a Comment

Now that winter is here, it brings with it lifestyle changes that go with the darker nights and colder weather. Although winter is certainly not all doom and gloom – after all it is the festive season and a walk in a frosty woodland is a magical experience – there are things to be more aware of in the winter that we should try to protect ourselves from.

Here are three things to prepare for in the winter and how you can help to prevent them…

Health – In the winter months it is particularly important that we do the best we can to protect our health as this is a time when many bugs go around. This year more than ever it is important to protect against winter illnesses, as we also have Covid-19 in the mix as well as the usual suspects. Illnesses like the flu go around every winter so it is a good idea to try to protect ourselves from them as best we can. Doing things like having your flu vaccination, especially if you have underlying health conditions or are over the age of 50 is important.

Cleanliness and good hygiene is also a good way of preventing illnesses especially in the workplace which is where many illnesses spread. Cleaning your work area frequently, regular hand washing and having a professional cleaner such as this office cleaning Cheltenham based company https://intocleaning.co.uk/services/office-cleaning-gloucestershire/office-cleaning-cheltenham help you with this are all good things to do during the winter months.

Safety of Home – Winter brings with it lots of bad weather and it is important to make sure that your home is fit to deal with the worst of the weather that the winter can bring. Although we don’t often have extreme weather in the UK, the winter can bring with it high winds, flooding and heavy snow which can take their toll on your home if it is not prepared. Take some time to ensure that the roof is all in good repair, that drains, and gutters are clear (check especially in autumn as falling leaves can clog drains and gutters quickly. It is also a good idea to make sure that all garden furniture is secure and that fences are also strong enough to survive strong winds which may come over the winter months.

Security – The longer and darker evenings are the perfect opportunity for burglars, so home security in the winter should be a priority. Make sure that the boundaries of your home are difficult or impossible to access – make repairs to fences that are weak or damaged and also put security lighting in areas that are dark as this is where a burglar is likely to attempt to gain access so as not to be seen. As well as your home make sure that you protect your car – if possible, park it in a secure garage but failing that make sure that you have it under a light and monitor with alarms and CCTV security.
