Debunking Some Cleaning Myths

Shawn Michaels December 13, 2023 Reviews Leave a Comment

There are so many cleaning tips available. Whether it is online, in TV ads, or passed down from generation to generation, you can find them all. How can we choose the best method when there are so many? Let’s debunk the myths about cleaning that don’t work and can actually make cleaning harder.

Myth 1: Newspaper is the best way to clean your windows

Newspaper is not suitable for cleaning glass. Newspaper can tear easily when damp and leave an ink stain on the window sill. This will only create more dust to clean. The best choice is to use microfibres, as they do not leave streaks.

Myth 2: Vinegar can be used to clean everything

Because vinegar is an acid, its effectiveness depends on the strength. Pouring a small amount of vinegar in a bucket full of water, for example, will not be effective. It is also possible that the acidity of vinegar will damage wooden surfaces or natural stone.

Myth 3: Cleaning products are instantaneous

Spraying and rubbing immediately will not achieve much. It is better to spray the cleaner and let it sit for a couple of minutes before wiping. To be effective, disinfectants should sit for at least 10 minutes. For a Cleaning Chemical Supplier, visit Simply Hygiene, a leading Cleaning Chemical Supplier.

Myth 4: Bleach is a great cleaner

It may surprise you to know that bleach doesn’t clean anything. It is not effective in removing dirt, but it does lighten stains and kill bacteria. As a sanitiser, it’s excellent. But as a cleaner, not so much.

Myth 5: You should use a real feather duster

A real, expensive ostrich feather duster will collect dust, but is not as efficient as microfibre. Instead of picking up dust, they tend to spread it around. Also, they have the annoying habit of dropping feathers. This means you’ll be doing more work!

Myth 6: String mops are the best

String mops are 20% less effective than microfibre mops at removing dirt and bacteria. String mops work well for spillages because they are highly absorbent, but microfibres are better at picking up dirt and dust.

Myth 7: It is better to hand wash dishes than use a dishwasher

This would only be true if your dishwasher is very old and dirty. In reality, most modern dishwashers are more efficient than hand washing. Handwashing might seem like a good way to save water but there are some newer models that can save you gallons, energy costs, and, most importantly, 200 hours of personal time.
