Clogged drains are a pain; however, they can be remedied quite easily with caustic soda. Let’s take a look at what caustic soda is, why we use it, and how to use it.

What is caustic soda?

Like most cleaning agents, caustic soda is a powerful chemical compound: sodium hydroxide. Like most chemical compounds, it is highly corrosive, allowing for the swift removal of stubborn blockages in your drains.

Of course, this means it can be hazardous; therefore, you should take the proper precautions before use. Thick, protective gloves, goggles, and a face mask will keep your hands, eyes, and face safe from burns.

Clearing the area beforehand – including children and pets – will help mitigate the risk of splashes and contamination.

How to use caustic soda

Firstly, you need to prepare your equipment. Your gloves, goggles, and mask should be checked off, and you will also need a bucket, a measuring cup, water, an apron, and – of course – your caustic soda.

Measure out the desired amount of caustic soda and cold water, with the packet usually indicating the ideal ratio. Gently stir the mixture with a non-metal spoon to avoid potential reactions; then, let it sit and fully dissolve for a few minutes.

Remove any standing water in your sink or bath with buckets and cloths. Pour the caustic soda solution down the drain, letting the solution sit for around half an hour. This will provide ample time for the blockages to dissolve.

Finally, flush the drain with hot water, avoiding any splashes by pouring slowly. This process can be repeated if necessary, and a plunger can help dislodge any leftover blockages.

Blockages may sometimes be a deeper problem than they seem, for which you can seek out CCTV drain surveys Reading from companies such as https://www.drainpower.co.uk/drainage-services/cctv-drain-surveys/reading.

Ensure all the equipment is thoroughly washed, and do the same for your hands, arms, and face. If you plan to dispose of any leftover solution, make sure you check with your local waste management authority beforehand.
