Things to Know About Fascias and Soffits

Fascias, guttering and soffits play a vital role in keeping your home dry and pest-free. Gleaming fascias and soffits also make your home more appealing and attractive, especially if your home is on the market.

Refreshing the exterior of your home is a good investment, and replacing fascias and soffits that are worn or old will protect your walls and roof whilst preventing water damage and damp.

What are Fascias and Soffits?

A soffit is a cover that sits between the wall and outer edges of the roof, sealing and protecting the rafter feet. They are usually constructed of UPVC and are hardwearing to cope with exposure to rain.

A fascia is fixed to the exposed edges of rafters. They are made from high-grade UPVC, such as UPVC fascia boards from https://www.absolutebuildingplastics.co.uk/upvc-fascia-boards/.

Fascia boards seal and protect the interior of your home and roof from exposure to the outside elements, support the guttering and roof tiles.

Guttering’s purpose is to collect water from the roof and to direct the flow as it drains.

Here is a look at some of the other parts.

Soffit Boards: These run along the underside of the roofline and protect rafter feet.

Downpipe: This transports rainwater from the gutter into the drain.

Ventilation: Vents can be cut into a soffit during manufacture or fixed at the top of a fascia board and are vital for allowing roof timbers to breathe. This prevents the development of moisture, which can lead to damp and mould and is detrimental to your health.

Common Signs of Fascia and Soffit Damage

Peeling and Flaking Paint

Sanding and painting the damaged area can prevent any further destruction. This job should be repeated annually as painted timber soffits and fascias will continue to peel and flake due to temperature fluctuations.

Damp and Rot

Sections of damp and rot at the roofline will likely spread quickly and cause significant damage.

Leaking Gutters

Gutters will quickly develop leaks if they aren’t cleaned frequently enough. Debris such as leaves and balls can clog gutters, and when the weather gets colder, the collected water freezes and expands, damaging the gutter.

Infestations

Many unwanted pests make their homes in damp, small spaces, making rotting fascias an ideal home for many species of rodents and insects.
