Drills to improve your football endurance

Linda Blair April 11, 2017 Reviews Leave a Comment

The simplest way to improve endurance and build fitness is practising drills that encourage repeated bursts of energy, like fast runs, and then short rests to aid recovery. It mimics real play, when you need to sprint past players and turn on the power in an instance.

Beginners drill

Being able to maintain control of the ball and keep possession whilst moving forward in attack is a fundamental part of the game, and getting it right isn’t always easy. Start using the width of the pitch and dribble as fast as possible to the middle, then leave the ball and run the rest of the way at 80% effort. Return to the ball at the same pace, and resume dribbling to the touchline. Time the exercise and allow yourself the same time for resting. Repeat six times.

Intermediate drill

Using the space between the goal line and the centre spot line, place one player halfway between the two, the first ball on the centre sport line and one player ten yards behind that. Position another player on the goal line, holding the second ball, all lined up. The third player starts by sprinting towards the first ball and passing to the player ten yards away, before sprinting back to beyond starting position, when the goal-line player throws the ball to be headed. Sprint back to the starting position. Keep the drill going until each player has run six times.

Advanced drill

Start at a corner and jog around the perimeter. Run at 70% effort to halfway and jog the remainder of the lap. Take the 70% to the full length, and jog what’s left. Continue building till you can run at 70% the whole way round.

Whatever your level, taking things seriously does make a difference. Hold regular training sessions, warm up properly, and practice technique with regular drills. Wear a club kit. Even Junior Football Kits will help focus the mind of the smaller players and will have a positive impact on their game and their attitude towards their team. There are lots of kit suppliers online, such as Kit King https://www.kitking.co.uk, to help you get exactly what you need.

Avoid burnout by skipping drills for a couple of days before a match.
