Selecting a bathtub is a very personal decision. However, if you follow the rules, you’ll end up with the perfect bath for your bathroom, whether it’s meant for all the family or a luxury ensuite.
Quality first, cost second
Don’t cut corners when it comes to your bathtub and always budget for decent quality. Nothing ruins the look of a bathroom more quickly than installing a cheap tub when you’ve used high quality tiles and accessories.
Before you go shopping for that perfect bath, take accurate measurements of your bathroom and draw it out on graph paper so you can draw up a proper plan and get an idea of what size tub will fit well into the available space.Consider a corner bath if space is tight.
Soaker or showerer?
If you prefer to soak, you might like to investigate whirlpool baths. These can really relieve the stresses of the day and make a luxurious addition to a bathroom. However, if you prefer the ease and convenience of a shower but don’t have space for a separate walk in cubicle then a P or L shaped shower bath is the ideal solution.
Try your tub for size
One size definitely doesn’t fit all. If you’re the one who loves a soak and you’re 5’4” then don’t make the mistake of buying a tub for a six footer. Do you need grab rails? Would you like an arm rest? Do you prefer a single ended tub that makes showering simple, or a double ended tub that the kids will fit into?
Size up materials
Acrylic is strong, warm to the touch and affordable but be prepared to pay a little more for a bath with resin reinforcement. Steel with an enamel finish is extremely durable, UV resistant and hygienic. If you hanker after the kind of traditional freestanding cast iron baths you’d find in a stately home, they’re both beautiful and very long lasting and can be surprisingly affordable when you source from a supplier like
Don’t overcrowd your bathroom, and choose a smaller size bath if necessary, to really maximise the space. Don’t rule out a slipper style freestanding bath in a small space as they can make a fabulous design statement.
