Google也拥有一套通用标签，那些标签用来对上个月实验报告的搜索结果进行分类。要使用通用标签进行网页标注，你可以建立自定义搜索引擎然后从列表中添加标签。我建立了自定义搜索引擎用来测试标签的质量，注意到很多情况下标签并不能很恰当地对页面内容进行描述。
许多人进行一个热门的查询（例如：“Vista”），搜索引擎就会尝试使用改进的方法引导他们到正确的搜索结果。改进的一个方式是增加另一个可以消除不明确性的字词（打个比方：“Vista评论”），但这不总是最好的方法，因为某些人对Windows Vista进行评论时在页面中并没有使用“评论”这个词，因为使用提供评论的一组页面能节约时间。
Hakia，一个今年将正式启动的语义搜索引擎，对通用的查询使用了分类目录，像iPod或者意大利，但它们看上去像是动态生成的，并且更像是百科的条目。
